          - Variant 'apiElements' capability com.android.tools.build:gradle:8.0.1 declares a library, packaged as a jar, and its dependencies declared externally:

  1. Chosen as BEST ANSWER

I've found the solution, my $JAVA_HOME environment variable, was different from my jdk configured using update-alternatives.

I needed to use: export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/my/jdk/1.17
and: sudo update-alternatives --config java and opt my java 17

  2. My solution:
File -> Settings -> Build, Execution, Deployment -> Build Tools -> Gradle

    Select: JDK 17
