I want to change pointing direction of drop down caret since initially it points down, therefore I want it to point right direction initially and when specific drop down menu / link clicked change it to point down.

Here’s what I tried but it does not working.

  1. You have wrong css selector, and you have to distinguish between dropdown open and closed state.
    Below is corrected version:

    <!doctype html>
    <html lang="en">
      <head>
        <meta charset="utf-8">
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
        <title>Bootstrap demo</title>
        <link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-QWTKZyjpPEjISv5WaRU9OFeRpok6YctnYmDr5pNlyT2bRjXh0JMhjY6hW+ALEwIH" crossorigin="anonymous">
      <style>
     .navbar-expand-lg .navbar-nav .dropdown-toggle.show::after{
            transform: rotate(0);
            transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;
        }
         .navbar-expand-lg .navbar-nav .dropdown-toggle::after{
            transform: rotate(-90deg);
            transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;
        }
    </style>
      </head>
      <body>
    <nav class="navbar navbar-expand-lg bg-body-tertiary">
      <div class="container-fluid">
        <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar</a>
        <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarSupportedContent" aria-controls="navbarSupportedContent" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
          <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>

        <div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="navbarSupportedContent">

  2. You can check in devtools caret class is .dropdown-toggle::after, when toggled down it takes .show class. So you can do transform rotate to change its orientation as follow

    .dropdown-toggle::after{
        transform: rotate(-90deg);
    }

    .dropdown-toggle.show::after{
        transform: rotate(0deg);
    }
