nginx reverse proxy by condition

There are two web-apps:

  • an app for desktop browser;
  • an app for mobile browser;

Ahead of them there is nginx. I have a trouble to configure nginx’s reverse proxy depending on a browser type (desktop/mobile).

There is an example of a config below:

nginx uses port 8585. When I open localhost:8585 from desktop browser I get error 502 Bad Gateway with logs

but there are troubles with reverse proxy.

    The problem was that I had to use docker-compose services' names instead of localhost. This is reasonable because nginx's container doesn't contain any other apps on localhost.

    The final solution looks like this:

    Well the "rewrite … redirect" is executed by the client the "proxy_pass …" from nginx servers.

    I see 2 options:

    • Add resolver to the config
    • use 127.0.0.1 for localhost so that no resolving is necessary.

    You can see the problem with resolving in this log line.

    I would like also to highlight this Wiki entry If is Evil… when used in location context just to add the attention that if should be avoided when possible, in your case looks like the usage of "if(…)" is a valid use case.

    I’m not sure if this line will not overwrite the line above in your config because there is no "else" logic in nginx.
